Little Cumbrae Casle på Castle Island


Little Cumbrae Castle er ei borg på Allinturrail[1] eller Castle Island, ei lita tidvassøy like aust for Little Cumbrae i Firth of Clyde.


Den vesle firkanta borga vart bygd av Lord Eglinton på 1500-talet, kanskje for å hindre snikskyting av hjort og kanin.[2][3]Walter Stewart (1293 - 1326), som gifta seg med Marjorie Bruce, dotter til kong Robert the Bruce, kan ha bygd ei borg eller ei jakthytte her og sonen hans, Robert II var her og jakta hjort.[1]

På Oliver Cromwell si tid let jarlen av Eglinton kona si med ein garnison på førti mann halde til i borga for å halde ho trygg. Jarlen vart teken til fange etter å ha kjempa mot Cromwell i slaget ved Worcester (3. september 1651) og Lady Montgomerie vart rådd til av markien av Argyll om å anten gje borga til styesmaktene eller øydeleggje ho så snart ammunisjon og kanonar hadde vorte fjerna.[4]


Archibald Hamilton var ein ven av Oliver Cromwell og vart sete i fangekjellaren i borga av jarlen av Eglinton (died 1661) før han vart ført til Stirling og hengt.[1] Styrkane til Cromwell øydela borga, kanskje på grunn av rolla ho spelte i lagnaden til Archibald Hamilton;[1].
