Stax Records




Stax Records er eit USA-amerikansk plateselskap, opphavleg basert i Memphis i Tennessee.


Det vart skipa i 1957 som Satellite Records, men endra namn i 1961 til Stax Records.
Namnet på selskapet er sett saman av namna til dei to grunnleggjarane, syskenparet Jim Stewart og Estelle Axton (STewart og AXton = Stax).[1]


Selskapet var ein stor faktor i utviklinga av Southern soul- og Memphis soul-stilen. Stax gav òg ut gospel, funk, jazz og blues. Dei var kjende for dei mange [[afroamerikanarar>afroamerikanske]] artistane sine, men vart grunnlagd av to kvite sysken. Både banda og dei tilsette i selskapet bestod av både kvite og svarte amerikanarar, som husbandet til selskapet, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, i ei tid då det framleis var rasestridar og spaningar i Memphis og Sørstatane.[1]


Etter at den største stjerna på Stax, Otis Redding, døydde i 1967, og selskapet reiv seg laus frå distribusjonsavtalen sin med Atlantic Records i 1968, fortsette Stax hovudsakleg under den nye medeigaren, Al Bell.[1] Dei neste fem åra utvida Bell drifta til selskapet, for å konkurrere med hovudrivalen til Stax, Motown Records i Detroit. I midten av 1970-åra førte fleire faktorar, mellom anna ein problematisk distribusjonsavtale med CBS Records, til at selskapet vart insolvent og måtte leggjast ned seint i 1975.[1]


I 1977 fekk Fantasy Records tak i Stax-katalogen frå etter 1968 og utvalde innspelinga frå før 1968. Frå og med 1978 byrja Stax (no eigd av Fantasy) å signere nye artistar og gje ut ny musikk, i tillegg til at dei gav ut tidlegare Stax-musikk. Tidleg i 1980-åra stoppa dette opp og dei neste to tiåra var Stax i røynda berre eit selskap som gav ut tidlegare innspelingar.


Etter at Concord Records kjøpte Fantasy i 2004, vart Stax-etiketten reaktivert og vert i dag nytta til å gje ut både musikk frå katalogen frå 1968-1976 og nyare innspelingar av moderne R&B- og soul-artistar. Atlantic Records eig framleis rettane til det meste av Stax-musikk frå 1959 til 1968.[1]
